tres. Hikari

Hikari was a very engaging individual for Riley upon their first meeting though she clashes with him, somewhat, in terms of personality. Even so, with Hikari’s princess-like manners and charm, it was not hard for him to treat her as such and eventually become her close friend.

As aforementioned, Riley spoils her to some degree— perhaps, unlike Flint or any other of Hikari’s older male friends, still, he has his own ways which are a little detached at best (considering he’s quite the lone wolf, it would seem so).

It’s no doubt that the young trainer is smart, but he still sees so much untapped potential and he takes it upon himself to stimulate that. Riley likes engaging her in intellectual discussions, often ranging from broad subjects such as Psycology to Philosophy, or just petty chats about life and Pokemon; and these discussions oftentimes come with very surprising feedback. Aside from that, Hikari is very affectionate, and she has expressed her platonic adoration for him— it wasn’t hard for Riley to return that fondness; her sincerity has flattered him a great deal.

He’s aware of how she is still a teenager with unstable moments, so his patience serves him good in times that Hikari is in a state of emotional turmoil; he would often remind her to have a clear head before tackling any problem, but it would seem that that advice is yet to be followed…

On personality, and other things;

Riley was not very skilled as a trainer due to his secluded upbringing, having often been regarded instead as a fledgling of battle artistry. Upon receiving his very first Pokemon, he immediately fixed himself on starting small and work his way up; humble as a boy, he was not afraid to admit his shortcomings and use them for self-motivation. He is steadfast and focused and whatever goals he’s set his mind on, he will work relentlessly for and see through to its achievement; what efforts he poured on training and improving has given him the continuous winning streak and eventually he gained his own reputation as a competent trainer.

Just like the rye for which his name originates, he is resilient; in the face of adversary, he will not hesitate to give it his all, even if it harms him.

His fondness for Steel-types comes from the very condition they have; most Pokemon of this category excel in defense, a trait which he’s come to admire. Over the years, he’s set up walls for himself; not to prevent himself from getting hurt, but rather, to keep himself fairly distant and focused. He values his security and privacy greatly.

He doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve, so it’s not often that one will see his emotions vary from his common civility, especially in the company of people he barely knows. Outside his usual disposition to train, he can be quite the social butterfly, however, there are few he regards his friends (closer friends even fewer) and would remain loyal to.

One of his flaws is that he’s too polite for his own good, stretching his patience as far as possible just so he can’t hurt anyone. His oftentimes inability to speak his mind has a lot of setbacks… Given the chance to, however, one can find that he is rather opinionated. Other weaknesses include being domineering, reserved and closed minded at times.

“Ah, two of my most favourite people. It’s a shame that we can’t always spend our days together— Byron has his duties as Canalave City’s resident gym leader, and Roark, taking after his father, manages with Oreburgh Town’s gym, and the aforementioned town’s mines. I, on the other hand, still have my eyes on any further knowledge regarding the Aura.

Although Byron may visit the island now and then, I find myself quite occupied with my studies, and I do not take the opportunity to ‘catch up’. I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel guilty; Byron has, since when I was young, given me a lot of his time, [even coming to the point where I consider him a second father] and I am ashamed to say I cannot do the same for him. He’s said to me over and over again that he understands, Arceus bless him, but the guilt in my heart lingers despite his constant reassurances.

Roark— son of Byron, a good friend of mine. I’ve seen him grow up, and it is to my disdain to say that Byron’s parenting isn’t the most admirable. Of course, Roark knows that best of all. Nevertheless, he’s matured a very great deal; I strongly believe he’s doing rather well, and hopefully soon, Byron will realize that his son’s efforts are not in vain.

I owe my life’s worth of gratitude towards these two.”

"As you can see, the island is mostly made up of rocky terrain, but this is exactly why this island is best suited for us; to condition our hearts and bodies, just like a steel type."

My entire headcanon of how Riley and Lucario grew up together, summarized by this picture.

He was rather clumsy before mainly due to the sheltered life, but managed through self-discipline and determination to grow up and be how he is today.

Facts;

The name Riley is from either of two origins; from the Old English origin meaning “rye clearing”, or from Irish and Gaelic origin meaning “courageous”.

He was born on January 19th, and a Capricorn, said to be one of the most stable and serious of astrological signs.

They are normally confident, strong willed and calm. These hardworking, unemotional, shrewd, practical, responsible, persevering, and cautious to the extreme persons, are capable of persisting for as long as is necessary to accomplish a goal they have set for themselves.

His favourite color is undoubtedly blue. It is the color of sincerity, inspiration and spirituality, whilst dark blue is the color of truth and moderation.

He has a fondness for chocolate, it being the only kind of dessert he would allow himself to indulge in. And occasionally, some ice cream.

Although he often trains on Iron Island’s rocky terrain, or any place similar, he still wears his suit almost like a second skin.

Literature and Philosophy are two of his biggest interests when it comes to reading. Taste in music varies greatly— he can also play the violin and piano.

On Riley’s Family Background and History;

If one were to base off of the anime, specifically, the eleventh Pokemon movie, it can be noted that Riley bears a striking similarity to Sir Aaron, save for their manner of dressing. Though I should say that I’m building Riley’s character from his in-game role and personal speculations alone (his appearance in the anime doesn’t contribute much knowledge about him—), I find the aforementioned connection with this ancient figure quite necessary to start off with.

The very fact that Sir Aaron existed in the past is a very intriguing subject for Riley.

Having gained the title Knight of Cameron Palace and “Guardian of Aura”, it can be said that Sir Aaron has truly mastered the power over the elusive life force. That, and he has mentored over his Lucario, a Pokemon well-known for its use of Aura. He is the most well recorded Aura user in the medieval times of Rota, though unfortunate it is that few of those records survived. What little knowledge he can uncover about the knight, Riley believes, will help him in his personal quest to further understand the Aura itself.

It’s plausible that Sir Aaron came from a family whose members all had some power over Aura, and the genetic trait passed on. It just so happened that he was the best at controlling said skill and managed to master it— his siblings, given that he had any, could not achieve the same feat. It’s unlikely that Sir Aaron fathered a child, as he was a knight bound to the Palace’s servitude; and as having died at a rather young age and could not pass on the knowledge, the control over Aura began seeing a decline in the generations that passed on his family until it reached but a total minimum.

Having lost some of the once acclaimed power and influence in Rota, most of the ancestral family traveled from Rota, Kanto to Canalave City in the Sinnoh region to live a more peaceful life. There, the next generations settled for good and even wed with locals, started anew, and achieved new found plaudit through their tenacity.

I’m only proposing that he is an indirect descendant though, when came Riley’s generation— it wasn’t until he was born did the power of Aura resurface again. At a young age, roughly 5 years young, he manifested some of the Aura’s ability his parents only believed to be myth; mainly by reading other people’s Auras, he is able to predict actions or react accordingly. Because of this, plus the fact that he roots from a rather influential family, Riley had been privately tutored. It had been a pleasant experience [often, he spends his time reading, a hobby he’s clearly grown up with] though admittedly, it was lonely with no other person his age to play with. To make up for that loss, he was given a Riolu egg by his parents, and the Pokemon became his constant companion.

In his pre-teens, he started gaining a little more freedom, often going out of the house on his own, though still limited to the city’s territories. However, with his sheltered life, he was a mischievous young man. At 16, he’s managed to defeat the Sinnoh league and grow as an individual in the process. At the age range of 17 to 20 years, he met Byron and eventually, his son Roark; by this time, he’s grown considerably more mature. At 21, he set out on his personal goal to find out more about Aura, and master it.

Currently, he is 24, still travelling, or otherwise staying at Iron Island to continue his training.
